2027 INFORMS Applied Probability Society Conference
Accommodation
Where to stay in Durham during the conference, and how to book.
Contents
How booking works
Accommodation is not included in your conference registration and is booked separately, directly with the college or hotel. The conference does not handle room bookings or take payment for them.
Durham is a small city and July is a busy month. The number of rooms within walking distance of the Waterside Building is limited, and they are taken quickly. Delegates are strongly encouraged to book as early as possible, and certainly before the early registration deadline rather than after it.
Book early. Rooms in central Durham sell out well in advance for summer dates. If you are waiting on an abstract decision before committing, choose a booking with free cancellation rather than waiting to book.
Durham University colleges
During the summer vacation Durham University’s colleges open their rooms to visitors, and this is the option most delegates choose. Several colleges occupy historic buildings on and around the peninsula, including some overlooking the cathedral, and rates are generally lower than city hotels.
College rooms are booked through Event Durham, the university’s events and accommodation service. A conference rate and a booking link will be published here once arrangements are confirmed.

Hotels in Durham
Durham has a modest number of hotels and most are within walking distance of the Waterside Building. Booking is direct with each hotel; the conference has no block allocation with any of them.
| Hotel | Area | Walk to venue |
|---|---|---|
| Premier Inn Durham City CentreFreeman’s Place, Walkergate | Walkergate, beside the venue | 2 minutes |
| Radisson Blu Hotel, DurhamFrankland Lane | Riverside, north of the venue | 5 minutes |
| The Kingslodge InnWaddington Street, Flass Vale | Near the railway station | 12 minutes |
| Delta Hotels Durham Royal County59 Old Elvet | Old Elvet, across Elvet Bridge | 13 minutes |
| Hotel Indigo Durham9 Old Elvet | Old Elvet, in the former county hall | 15 minutes |
| Farnley TowerThe Avenue | West of the centre, uphill | 20 minutes |
| Travelodge Durham9 Station Lane, Gilesgate | Gilesgate, east of the centre | 20 minutes |
Walking times are approximate and assume the riverside route where possible. Delegates staying in Old Elvet or west of the centre should allow extra time, as those routes involve bridges and gradients.
Further options are available in Newcastle, Darlington and Chester-le-Street, all a short train journey away, if central rooms are unavailable.
Accessible rooms
Accessible rooms are available in some colleges and hotels, but numbers are limited and the historic parts of the city involve steep gradients and cobbles. Delegates with access requirements should book early and contact [email protected], and the committee will advise on suitable options and routes to the venue.
Important notice: accommodation scams
The conference will never contact you to request payment for accommodation
Delegates, speakers and exhibitors at academic conferences are increasingly targeted by companies and individuals who claim to represent the event or an official booking agency. They offer to arrange rooms, or demand payment for rooms or registration fees. Some are outright fraudulent; others take payment and make no booking, or book at inflated rates.
These approaches arrive by email and by telephone, and can look convincing. The organisers do not release delegate contact details, but names and affiliations can be found in published programmes and online.
Ignore any approach of this kind. Book only through Event Durham or directly with a hotel, and if in doubt, forward the message to [email protected] before responding or paying anything.
