2027 INFORMS Applied Probability Society Conference

The APS Conference

Durham hosts the twenty-third meeting in a series running since 1981.

The Applied Probability Society

The Applied Probability Society is a subdivision of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Its purpose is to advance the use of probability theory, understood broadly, in analysing and improving the operation of complex systems that are shaped by uncertainty and randomness.

That mission spans an unusually wide range of settings and an equally wide methodological toolkit, and the community reflects it: members come from business schools, engineering departments, statistics, mathematics, economics and computer science.

Where it is applied

  • Manufacturing, logistics and transportation
  • Communication and computer networks
  • Service platforms and market design
  • Revenue management
  • Healthcare systems
  • Finance, insurance and energy
  • Social networks and data science applications

How it is done

  • Stochastic optimisation and control, including Markov decision processes, stochastic approximation and reinforcement learning
  • Stochastic modelling, including queueing theory, random graphs and diffusion processes
  • Rare-event analysis, large deviations and Monte Carlo methods
  • Online learning, statistical learning theory, model risk, distributional robustness and causal inference

The society also publishes Stochastic Systems, an open-access journal for work that advances the modelling, analysis and control of stochastic systems, whether through new models, new mathematical methods, or novel application of existing ones. Alongside its publications the society awards a number of prizes and sponsors the Markov Lecture.

Full details of membership, awards, officers and community activities are on the Applied Probability Society pages of INFORMS Connect.

The conference series

The INFORMS Applied Probability Conference is the society’s flagship meeting. It is held every two years, hosted in turn by institutions around the world, and brings the community together for plenary and keynote lectures, prize lectures, and invited and contributed sessions across the full breadth of the field.

Durham will host the twenty-third meeting in July 2027, the first time the conference has been held in the United Kingdom.
